Fancy Colored Diamonds
Fancy Colored Diamonds
In the jewelery trade “fancy” means “different than the norm.” Therefore, a fancy cut diamond refers to any cutting style other than a round brilliant or single cut. The GIA Diamond Dictionary defines a fancy color diamond as any naturally colored diamond with a noticeable depth of body color. From a technical standpoint, the GIA definition of a fancy colored diamond is more complex. Unlike other colored diamonds (except brown, yellow diamonds with grades of Faint, Very Light, and Light are not considered to be fancy colored diamonds, but are part of GIA’s D-to-Z color grading scale. In other words, fancy colored yellow and brown diamonds must have a greater depth of color than other colored diamonds in order to be classified as fancies or fancy diamonds, two other terms for fancy colored diamonds. For example, a K (faint yellow) diamond is not considered to be a fancy colored diamond, but a Faint pink diamond with the same lightness of color as a K-color diamond is a fancy colored pink diamond.
The color of fancies results from a variety of factors. Some of the most common caused are missing carbon atoms, or impurities such as nitrogen, hydrogen, and boron. Natural radiation can produce green or greenish colored diamonds, and fluorescence can contribute to diamond color. Inclusions can make diamonds look black or white. Table 10.1 briefly identifies the causes of color in various colored diamonds. Keep in mind that the process of creating color in diamonds is a lot more complex than the table makes it appear.
