How To Choose The Right Diamond Ring Settings

The diamond setting is what is normally thought of as the engagement ring portion.  It is also know as the prongs that hold the diamond, accompanied by the accent stones all attached to the band.  Essentially we are referring to everything except for the loose diamond that can be chosen separately. Diamond ring settings can be found in many styles, designs, and with a variety of accent possibilities. For the most part, diamond engagement ring settings are most popular in gold, whether yellow or white, and platinum.

Diamond Ring Setting styles can range from the Tiffany setting (a.k.a.Solitaire), Pave Framing, Tension, Solitaire with accents and many more.  View our Diamond Ring Designs page to get ideas. Settings may also feature smaller diamonds or gemstones as “accent stones.” Popular accent gemstones include: diamonds, sapphires, rubies, emeralds, tanzanite, as well as others.

When choosing the pureness of the gold we often recommend that you select a diamond ring setting in 18k gold. That being said, many charming and quaint designs also come in 14k and 16k so do not feel obliged to choose the 18k. But definitely do not choose anything lower than 14k.

* James Allen (our “Editor’s Pick” of online diamond jewelry stores) as well as Mondera and Blue Nile, which are also top-tier online sites, carry the largest variety online of settings. Try their Design Your Diamond Ring feature and give life to her perfect diamond engagement ring.

Design Your Ring

In many retail stores you will find rows and rows of diamond engagement ring settings for you to choose from.  Most of these will be missing the loose diamond that you are about to choose.  This purchase experience has been broken into two parts and you get to choose exactly what you want to spend on a diamond and what you want to spend on the diamond ring setting.  We feel this is a better way to buy her engagement ring rather than buy something already decided for you.

The exception to the rule of this is if the display or set is already what you want or simply has been heavily discounted to sell. Online diamond  retailers like Ross-Simmons and Buyz.com are ideal places for great bargains! (Make sure that the diamond engagement ring that you are buying is a Certified Diamond.)

When you start choosing the ring setting design you will come up against settings with pave accents, colored side stones, diamond side stones among many more.

As mentioned in the settings page a diamond engagement ring is put together by the loose diamond and the band with the prong to cradle the diamond.  A popular question in designing your perfect wedding ring is “which should I choose first, the diamond or the setting”?  The answer lies in which shape of diamond you have in mind.  Unfortunately not all diamond ring settings are not suitable for all shapes of diamonds.  Rectangular or square diamond shapes like princess or cushion do  not fit in all settings.

Sometimes you can have a hint of what you or your future fiancee is interested in.  Whether it be a band/setting of a particular metal (white gold, yellow gold or platinum) or a particular shape (Round brilliant, Asscher, Esmerald, Princess or Oval).  Start with the one that you are most decided upon and then find the ring setting or diamond to accommodate it.

Our favorite tools for designing a diamond engagement ring is the “create your own diamond engagement ring” tool of James Allen or Mondera. It offers so many options to play with whether its with the setting, the diamonds grade, diamond shape, and even diamond size.  You really get the feeling that you have designed her diamond engagement ring which then leads to great pride in the moment of proposal to be able to say that YOU designed the ring that she will wear forever.  You will really touch her heart knowing that you painstakingly designed her diamond ring. Make no mistake, I can tell you from experience that you will get huge points for that!
