How to Keep Your Diamond Clean
A clean diamond is a brilliant diamond. For all the money that you pay to get the best bang for your buck you would think that people would do a better job at taking care of their diamonds. I know this can be a difficult task especially as mesmerizing as a diamond can be. But a beautiful can attract many eyes and many more oily fingers. You pay a lot of money for your diamond to be as brilliant and fiery as possible. Why not keep it that way?
For starters try to keep those curious, oily fingers away. Like the old saying goes, “you see with your eyes, not with your hands…”. And that goes for you too! It’s easier said than done and unrealistic to think that you will keep your hands off of the diamond ring but try to keep it to a minimum. After all your diamond engagement ring is a diamond engagement ring, not a crystal ball.
Regular hand cleaning, and daily activity can also lead to oils, debris and soot accumulating around the diamond and the ring setting. Consider taking the diamond ring off and placing it in a safe place before applying hand lotions and soaps as they too will cause the the diamond to appear hazy and cloudy.
After all the most light reflected back to you in the very best diamonds is 91%. Once you get it dirty and oily you can easily come down to 60%-40%. Hopefully you don’t neglect diamond cleaning that much. Keeping your diamond clean is not a difficult task and should be done regularly. The simple and quick task of diamond cleaning can be performed with an ultrasonic cleaner. An ultra sonic cleaner can be purchased at some specialty stores for under $50. They work for most gem stones but not all. Make sure you check before you start putting all your jewelry into it.
Another way to keep your diamond clean is with a bottle of Parson’s Sudsy Ammonia and a medium toothbrush. Fill a container with two parts water and one part ammonia. Be sure to keep the container lid closed on this solution as the fumes can be strong.
Leave the diamond ring soaking for at least ten minutes after which you need to scrub the diamond and setting down with the tooth brush. Be certain not to forget to clean under the diamond setting as well as all the nooks and crannies. Keeping the diamond clean on all sides maximizes the light that can be reflected. Once you have finished scrubbing the diamond ring you will finish off the diamond cleaning with rinsing the diamond with warm water and then drying off the ring and diamond with a lint free cloth.
Another very ingenious product helpful to diamond care and that is less harmful and easier to work with is the “Powerescent Tablet”. Invented by Ronald Lockhart, the product isn’t much different to how an alka-seltzer tablet works (do not drink it!). You just drop the tablet into a glass or bowl of water with the diamond ring (or any type of jewelry) in it and let the tablet work. Wait at least ten minutes and your end result is a clean diamond engagement ring. This also work for emeralds and pearls which are the more sensitive of jewelry types. While an ultra sonic cleaner or bottle of ammonia may be difficult to take on vacation these tablets are very practical and safe to use.
If a local diamond jeweler offers a diamond cleaning service do not let your diamond ring out of your sight. This can be the perfect opportunity for an opportunistic jeweler to get their hands on your beautiful diamond and switch it for a fake diamond or a diamond of lesser value and quality. Only have it professionally cleaned at a jeweler if you are very familiar with the jeweler or if you can follow him back to where he will perform the diamond cleaning.
