Diamond Carat
Diamond Carats
Diamond Carat Weight is the measurement by which a diamond is measured. It’s the big first question about all diamonds: How big? How many carats? Like asking a man how much horsepower he has under the hood of his car! It is a number that is worn with pride. To give you a clear comparative measurement of a diamond, a carat is equal to 200 milligrams.
I am sure you can imagine by now that the larger the carat weight of a diamond the more valuable the investment. Larger diamonds are harder to find especially because it is difficult to find a relatively clean uncut diamond that a cutter thinks he can make a spectacular one while leaving it in the 3 carat diamond range. Most cases they are cut down to two smaller 1 carat diamond rings each or one 2 carat diamond and a 1 carat.
Due to the number of coincidences that have to occur for a diamond to be created by natural forces over hundreds of years it can be extremely difficult to find a large 4 carat diamond or even 5 carat diamond. For these reasons the value of a diamond cost per carat increases exponentially to the size of the diamond. For example a 2 carat diamond round brilliant can go for $15,000 – $20,000. This number can fluctuate by $5,000 depending on the quality of the loose diamond. See the diamond carat chart for a diamond price reference.
Now the big question now is, “Which one should you buy?” Here my advice is go as big as you can because size is an important factor. Size is noticeable to anyone, not just the untrained eye. This is the big wow factor. You can try to internally negotiate the other variables but this one should be one of the factors that you push the hardest for. However do not forget to weigh in the other C’s as the are extremely important
I want to make sure that I do over emphasize on the carat weight because she does have to live with this diamond ring forever and the initial excitement wears off and then you want her to stay with the positive impression that it is also a clean and colorless diamond with a great cut.
Just make sure that you do have your budget set rather firmly and invest in something that you can afford. If she loves you and accepts your request to marry you it shouldn’t be because of the diamond that you chose. (Although diamonds carats might just weigh in your favor when it comes to saying yes.)
